Looking Under the Hood of Competency-Based Education (Webinar)

On November 7, 2016, AIR held a webinar to present highlights from itsStudy of Competency-Based Education(CBE), which examined the relationship between CBE practices and students' learning disposition, skills, and behaviors.

The study, funded by theNellie Mae Education Foundationand conducted in partnership with the Council for Chief State School Officers'Innovation Lab Network,examined policies and practices in 18 high schools in three states and explored how students' CBE experiences were associated with positive changes in learning capacity. The findings from this study reveal both the promise and limitations of CBE, showing that competency-based practices may benefit kids, but that not all self-identified "CBE schools" consistently implement core CBE features.

This webinar featured highlights from AIR's study, including the core components of CBE and how they might benefit students. AIR staff was joined by two state-level study partners, Paul Leather, deputy commissioner for theNew Hampshire Department of Education,and Ryan Krohn, director of theInstitute for Personalized Learningin Wisconsin. Our partners shared their reflections on the study's findings and implications for their CBE work.
